Such a vibrant, energizing and tasty power juice! Drinking a portion of this green juice is a great way to top up your veggie intake in the cooler months or any time you crave or need to consume extra produce.

Eating a lot of vegetables can feel overwhelming at times. Creating meals with an abundance of produce takes time but is always well worth the effort. Having a least one vegetable juice recipe in your repertoire is nice to have.

Fresh green juice is great to enjoy in the morning because it’s quick. It also makes a perfect pick-me-up snack. I don’t think of green juice as a meal replacement, but it’s beautiful to enjoy to boost your immune health!

What is Green Juice

Green juice is a beverage that contains fresh leafy greens and other vegetables and fruit. There’s no specific recipe to make the perfect glass of green juice but keep reading to get a copy of my favourite gut-friendly concoction.

Best Ingredients to Make Green Juice

Combining a variety of ingredients to make green juice is best to create delicious juice. Using fresh organic produce is recommended when available. The idea is to use lots of vegetables with a little fruit to provide you with a range of health benefits. Here’s an example:

  • Organic spinach or kale
  • Turmeric root
  • Ginger root
  • Carrots
  • Cucumber
  • Celery
  • Fennel bulb
  • Fresh cilantro
  • Avocado (add creaminess)
  • Lime or lemon
  • Coconut water (no added sugar)
  • Himalayan or sea salt (optional)

The lemon and coconut water adds just the right level of sweetness while keeping the glycemic index on the lower side. The variety of greens and fresh vegetables with ginger and turmeric root creates the best power juice with many nutritional benefits.

You can tweak the ingredients to what you have on hand, but the addition of fresh greens is a must. To complete the flavour of this beverage, a pinch of Himalayan or sea salt adds a touch of extra minerals.

Juicer or High-Speed Blender

Until recently, all I had to make green juice was a high-speed blender and a mesh bag to squeeze out all the beautiful fresh juice. You can see a few pictures in my older Squeezed Veggie Green Juice post.

A few weeks ago I tested a juicer, in my kitchen, for the first time and let me tell you—I was impressed! I was avoiding getting one for the longest time due to the clean up process. Even though a juicer does include a few parts to help you extract all the juice, the model I got is actually easy to clean. Not at all messy compared to having to squeeze all the blended juice by hand with a mesh bag.

How to Make Green Juice with a Juicer

If trying a new juicer, please read the owner’s manual and wash all the parts before using it.

When I tested my juicer for the first time, I washed and prepped all my vegetables ahead of time. The harder veggies like carrots were cut in half then into smaller pieces. I chopped the celery and fennel into 5-in pieces but cutting them even shorter would have been better. The long celery strands can get caught on the way out of the machine.

If your produce is organic, you can leave the peel on, even for the ginger and turmeric root.

Scoop out the avocado before putting it into the machine. And, for the lime or lemon, cut off most of the skin. I added the coconut water towards the end, but you can pour it in bit by bit throughout the process.

Fresh greens such as kale or spinach are often the easiest to juice. You can add them in between the other veggies at any time.

You can even make nut and seed milk with some juicers, but you need to soak the nuts/seeds ahead of time.

Benefits of Green Juice

Enjoying a glass of green juice per day is fabulous! But depending on how much natural sugar your recipe contains, it’s best to limit your intake to a few cups per day.

Please note that it’s still important to eat and chew some vegetables. Preparing your veggies in various ways (steamed, roasted, grilled, etc.), and consuming some raw, is equally beneficial.

Vegetables and fruit include fibre, many necessary vitamins and minerals that are great for digestion, your skin, and many other things—including brain health!
